Three Things Thursday

1.  What?!?!?!  It's Thursday?  Seriously.  I get the kids back into school and the days just magically fly by.  It sure takes a lot to get a house back in some kind of order post-holiday.  I have all these things I want to write about but to sit down and do it has not been easy this week!  Maybe once I get the last of my Christmas stuff put away today the normalcy will return.  Fingers crossed.

2.  Just over a week out before race day.  Craziness I tell ya.  You're going to fall over once I tell you this, so prepare yourself... but since my last race mid-December, I've only ran ONE day each week.  Longest run has been 10 miles this last Monday, one week it was 4, one week it was 6.  I know.  I'm going minimalist this cycle.  It wasn't planned that way, but here I am one week out.  Just for fun I might try to kick out 18 miles on Saturday.  It's all good, right?  Riiiigggghhhht?  (I need a little reassurance...)

3.  It's cold here.  Like mostly teen degrees, afternoon high of 22.  I can't handle cold running.  I'm feeling a little wimpish.  And there's no sign of it getting any better.   So that 18 miles I was just talking about will be on the treadmill.  Hopefully there will be a good movie on at the gym...  maybe I'll slip the girl a little somethin to put in one of my top picks... :)

Do you run in the cold, no matter what?

Longest treadmill escapade?

  1. I hear you about the days flying by! I can't believe that you've only ran 1 day a week since the race! I can't run in weather too cold. 50 is about the coldest I can do.

  2. I don't own a treadmill or a gym membership so I run in the cold.

  3. Verry interesting minimalist schedule! I'm sure it will work nicely for you!
I run in the cold almost no matter what. Through some of my training in sub-z I'd do half outside then the rest on the mill.
Longest mill adventure was the final, biggest enchilada before Boston '09. We had 8" of slush on the ground so I milled for 22 miles.

  4. Really, really, really--make yourself get outside! With the right clothing, you will be fine. So much better than suffering through 18 on the treadmill! You can do it.

  5. Outside unless it's dangerous. 10.5 on the treadmill.

  6. outside unless we have storms and it is not safe..or if I have nobody to watch the kids of course.
TM longest: just 6 and it felt like 50

  7. moving from AL to WI i never ever ever ever ever thought i'd like running in the cold. but it's not so bad. for the top: tight water wicking base layer, then fleece, followed by wind-proof if need be. tights with looser pants on top. gloves. neck gaitor. hat.
    done.

it takes some getting used to but i guarantee you'll get warm once you get started.

  9. wow. 18 miles on a treadmill would make you my personal hero. for real!

i do one run every week outside no matter what. after that i'll let myself indoors if its bad, but i don't like to be inside too much. i feel like i loose the fire to run when i'm cooped up like a hamster.

  10. No treadmill, no gym so its outside or nothing for me. Lately I've been pushing my runs until I can run at the warmest possible time of the day though.

As for your minimalist schedule... I'm feeling better about the running I've been doing now. ;) I think it will be all good. You have more than enough base and at least the weather will be warmer for you next weekend.

  11. I normally don't run in the cold! The temps you guys are having would make me want to hibernate...with a cave full of comfort food!

You should check out my blog post on snotcicles :)

  12. I'm sure it won't matter that you haven't run much this time around. Your legs are probably grateful for the mini-break. And let's face it - routine is so much harder to maintain over the Xmas/ NY period.

  13. I would rather be hung up by my toenails than run 18 miles on a treadmill. You are my hero! Three miles on a treadmill is my max. Good luck!!!

  14. I used to tough out the cold, and now I prefer the treadmill...

  15. I can't bring myself to run outside right now! TOO cold. And too much snow! I hate running w/out any room to get over when cars come (otherwise jumping into 2 feet of snow lining the streets! I tried an indoor track (5 lengths= 1 mile), but the constant curving around put a lot of pressure on the outside of my foot. I'd be really ticked if I got injured from that. So.... treadmilling it is. I'll start training for the Ogden marathon the last week of January, so maybe I'll change my mind & start running outside once I start running longer distances.

  18. My house falls apart after Christmas...major crazy!!!
I can believe one day a week running...that's all I ever do...but I'm changing that?!
Your a racing machine...I'm in awe!
Longest treadmill run was 10 miles...a super long time ago...I don't mind the cold, as long as I'm dressed for it! We must be neighbors...because we have the exact same weather forecast1

  19. Awww! I wish we could be running buddies! We are in California now. Since we full time RV, we move around A LOT!! We were in Utah for the snotcicle race.

I'll be thinking about you & your long run when I'm outside running in my bikini in sunny CA ;)

  20. I avoid the treadmill whenever possible and it doesn't usually go below 20 or so here at the coldest, so I bundle up and I'm okay. I just did some treadmill running over Xmas when home in Northern Wisc b/c it felt too cold. I planned to do 10 miles on each of 4 days but never made it. Did 6 the first day and it felt like 60. Then finally managed 8, 9, and 8, but wow, it sucked.

Longest TM run ever: 13.1 in Jamaica on the 4th of July in 2005 due to rain and family pressure not to leave the resort for fear of ... who knows what, murder? But it was mostly rain and not knowing what the traffic was like and if I could find a decent route. Those 13 miles were such a beating I think it broke me of any treadmill inclinations for almost any weather.
