Motivational Tunesday

So I have something else to add to my fall changes this month.  I have a new profession.  It's one I've fallen into a bit by accident.  I was asked to speak in an asssembly at the junior high here in my town!  A motivational speech on being healthy, making good choices in health, friends and life.  Seriously.  I will be talking for 15 to 20 minutes to over 600, 12 to 15 year olds.  Help!  I've got a few ideas but I haven't written it out.  I've spoken in front of groups before but this will definitely be the largest and quite possibly the most hostile group.  I'm thinking I need a good activity/object, lesson/interactive game somewhere in between to keep their attention.  And, yeah, this will be taking place Monday morning.  Gotta pull it together or this new profession could be short-lived.  So while I contemplate how best to present myself, to really get through to these tweens, I thought maybe I could do something like this and throw in a couple running rhymes somewhere...( i know, sorry about the ad, couldnt figure out how to edit it out, it's worth the wait, I promise ;)

What do you think?  The kids would dig that, right?  I am such a hip-hop fan.  This was from the late show last week and I gotta give a shout out to my girl, Lady Ace, for sharing.  We've decided to go head to head at an undisclosed location and time to battle out our favorite rhymes from the past few decades...dance moves included.

Focus, focus.  For now I gotta leave the mic checking and b-girl stances for later and get back to the matter at hand.  My big speech.  I'm being serious when I ask for any ideas.  Has anyone done this before?  Good jokes for teens?  Things to avoid?  Maybe I could just get all their cell phone numbers and text them daily affirmations instead.  Maybe I could start by asking if they want to live in a van down by the river...

So blog changes are being put on hold for the moment.  I have to pull my thoughts together.  Bear with me...

Oh, and yeah, my hair is still dark red, my sister said it's copper.  Potato, potatoe.  Waiting for my hair dresser to call me back to get an appointment.  Who doesn't work on Mondays anyways?  Guess I'll be spending another day in seclusion hoping no one comes by for a suprise house visit.  For all you locals, this is not an invitation to drop by.   Aaaah.  The drama of hair color gone wrong.  I mean, really, how hard is it to make someone's hair look like Jen Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, or Sarah Jessica Parker.  Pretty hard I guess...  I'm trying to get up the courage to share a pic.  Maybe after it's fixed...  : )

I said a hip hop, the hippie, to the hippie, to the hip hip hop, you don't stop...running.  : )

  1. You are going to be awesome. I agree...the kids will love a short hip hop routine to end your talk (I say have the principal stand up and join you) :)

Good luck! Oh and show pics of the Dirty Dash, they'll love that! :)

  2. I feel your pain on the hair situation! At the beginning of August, I had a stylist change my hair from blonde hi-lights back to brown. The brown lasted about a day, before it turned bright copper. I went back to the stylist, and she put another two layers of brown on my hair. This also lasted about a day or two. I had to suffer through it for about three weeks; then the only thing I could do was go back to the blonde.

After about three weeks since the blonde, my hair is finally starting to feel and look normal again. I don't know why going from blonde to brown is so difficult! I guess I will be a blonde for the rest of my life!!!

  6. I feel for ya! I, too, love hip hop and have even done a maid of honor speech a la rhyme and it got mixed results :( Damn.
Anyway - I was doing some research for work this week and came across this website. There are some interesting studies linked here: http://www.outdoornation.org/ that talk about teenage obesity and more recently, reports about how fitness is tied not just to better performance in schools but actual physical differences (positive differences) in children's brains! That stuff may bore some kids but maybe there is a way to work some interesting facts/stats into a rhyme?
I checked this site for ideas: http://publicspeaker.quickanddirtytips.com/ but didn't see anything but maybe a more thorough search would be good. LOVE these podcasts (nutrition diva, etc).

BEST OF LUCK! Be sure to tell us how it went!

And if you haven't heard this, be sure to check out the song Chemistry Calesthenics by Blackalicious. These guys are incredible and this song is a lot of fun.

  7. Hold the fort isnt yous sister your hair stylist? Speaking of sisters. Email mine, she isn't the queen of health but she is queen of speaking to large groups and she can coach you through this. I will say when I see girls that could pig out on french fries and crap in jr high and high school and never get fat and now they've hit their 30's and they are fat it's like SWEET revenge. I know I am evil!

  8. I loved the video! And the van down by the river! Course those youngsters probably don't even know who Chris Farley was! Shame! You'll do great, sorry I don't have any tips but I am a horrible public speaker! Oh and I got those stickers from our local dollar tree!
